Palm Sunday!

S๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—น. That oh so important sense that can take us back within seconds to our childhood or to a memorable event. The smell of the first rains on dry and dusty soil brings me straight back to Africa. Often when my husband hugs me, I like to breathe in deeply as the smell of his aftershave makes me feel safe and after 25 years of marriage is one of beautiful familiarity. But the fragrance of potpourri can make me feel nauseous straight away as it reminds me of my pregnancy when the tiniest whiff made me feel sick!

Anointing oil was very important in Israel, and very expensive. Many oils were much more costly than diamonds and were a sign of great wealth. Each King and Priest was anointed prior to their taking office, the aroma advancing before them so that everyone would know โ€“ the King, the King is coming! Now when the new King was anointed, they didnโ€™t just drip a drop on his forehead, no โ€“ this could be as much as a pint of fragrant perfume! Letโ€™s take a quick look at a story back in the Old Testament, an occasion of celebration, great joy, the anointing of the future King of Israel, King Solomon โ€“ โ€œ๐‘บ๐’ ๐’๐’‚๐’… โ€ 1 Kings 1:38-40. But where was the fragrance? Where was the anointing oil with the Kingly aroma that would have told the crowd surrounding Him that Jesus was the King of Israel?

How I love Mary, always doing something unexpected, her love for Jesus always on display! Mary took a pound โ€“ thatโ€™s nearly two cups- of extremely expensive oil and washed Jesusโ€™ feet with it, using her beautiful hair as a rag! Mary, in an act of absolute humility, laid her self-worth at Jesusโ€™ feet, tenderly using her hair to clean away the dust and dirt from the day. Her actions saying, โ€œ๐ผ ๐‘”๐’พ๐“‹๐‘’ ๐“Ž๐‘œ๐“Š ๐‘’๐“‹๐‘’๐“‡๐“Ž๐“‰๐’ฝ๐’พ๐“ƒ๐‘”, ๐’ถ๐“๐“ ๐‘œ๐’ป ๐“‚๐‘’, ๐’ป๐“‡๐‘œ๐“‚ ๐“‚๐“Ž ๐’ป๐’พ๐“ƒ๐’ถ๐“ƒ๐’ธ๐‘’๐“ˆ ๐“‰๐‘œ ๐“‚๐“Ž ๐“ˆ๐‘’๐“๐’ป-๐“Œ๐‘œ๐“‡๐“‰๐’ฝ, ๐“‚๐“Ž ๐’พ๐’น๐‘’๐“ƒ๐“‰๐’พ๐“‰๐“Ž, ๐“‚๐“Ž ๐’น๐’พ๐‘”๐“ƒ๐’พ๐“‰๐“Ž, ๐‘’๐“‹๐‘’๐“‡๐“Ž ๐“‰๐’พ๐“ƒ๐“Ž ๐“๐’พ๐“‰๐“‰๐“๐‘’ ๐“… โ€ โ€œAnd the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.โ€ Not too surprising when you consider the amount of oil Mary poured out.

And so, our sweet Mary fulfilled that part of the story. Perhaps the part of the story where the fragrance of Christ began, the fragrance of the King of Kings and LORD of Lords. The fragrance of the Great I Am, YHWH. As Jesus rode into Jerusalem, the deep fragrance of spikenard went before Him, almost like the dot on the i or the cross on a t. This is the King of Israel. In the final week before the cross everywhere Jesus went, He would have carried the fragrance of the King with him, it would have said to the Roman soldier, โ€œ๐—œ ๐—”๐—บ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐˜€,โ€ to Herod and Pilate, โ€œ๐—œ ๐—”๐—บ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐˜€,โ€ to all those who mocked Him, beat Him and put Him to death, โ€œ๐—œ ๐—”๐—  ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—œ๐˜€๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฒ๐—น!โ€ ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿฆ‹

Our Savior Weeps

There are times when the ache in your heart threatens to overwhelm you, when your heart literally feels pain because of a grief so great or a burden too deep.  The only way to relieve that pressure that presses deep into your soul is to weep.  To cry great heaving sobs, oceans of tears, and then perhaps, but only perhaps, there is some sense of respite.   So many people tell me that they feel great after a โ€˜good cry,โ€™ but I donโ€™t.  I feel terrible, my head aches, and my eyes are red and irritated, and Iโ€™m an ugly crier, a hot mess.

Right there in the middle of a victory celebration, where palm fronds were waved, and thousands cried out โ€œHosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!โ€ (Matthew 21:9) the King of Kings, riding on the back of a young colt looked out over Jerusalem and literally began to sob. โ€œNow as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, saying, โ€œIf you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.โ€ (Luke 19:41-42)

My heart hurt when I read this verse, knowing that my Savior was so overcome with sorrow during this short celebration.  This was not simply a few tears that stained Jesus cheeks but the Greek tells us this was mourning, sobbing, or wailing aloud!  The grief that hit Jesusโ€™ heart as he looked at Jerusalem caused His shoulders to shake as he began to cry.

The future loss of His beloved city was almost too much to bear.  This should have been โ€œtheir day!โ€  โ€œIf you had known, even you, especially in this your dayโ€ฆโ€.  Not only were there 300 prophecies about the Messiah but this was such an important day that it had been prophesied by Daniel 483 years before!  It was a day that Israel could and should have recognized.

Sir Robert Anderson, the former head of Scotland Yard, calculated in his book, The Coming Prince, that Jesusโ€™ triumphal entry was exactly 483 years after Daniel spoke of it in Daniel 9:25. Incredible!  The day Zechariah predicted, the day Daniel spoke of, was such an important day, and it could have been โ€œtheir day.โ€

No wonder our precious Saviorโ€™s shoulders shook with grief, no wonder a sob escaped his throat, as He contemplated the future of His chosen people.  The signs were all there but they didnโ€™t see Him, they didnโ€™t recognize their Messiah!

Is today โ€œyour day? Your appointed time, the day in which you need to acknowledge that Jesus is the Messiah prophesied about countless times in the scriptures?ย  A day created for you from the beginning of time.ย  A day that will bring you peace, freedom, and joy in Christ, the beginning of a journey with the King!
